Maharashtra civic body polls to be held on December 2

State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare announced on Tuesday that Maharashtra’s local body elections will be conducted in phases, with the first phase scheduled for December 2.

This initial phase will cover elections for 246 municipal councils representing smaller cities and 42 Nagar Panchayats. The results will be declared the following day, on December 3.

Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Waghmare said that the election schedule for 29 municipal corporations, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis, where polls are also pending, will be announced later.

“In these elections, voting will be held to elect 6,859 members and 288 presidents across various local self-government bodies,” he stated. There are 1.7 crore eligible voters and 13,355 polling centres designated for the process, he added.

Polling will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Candidates can file their nominations until November 17, with scrutiny scheduled for November 18 and the deadline for withdrawing nominations set for November 21.

Waghmare also confirmed that the elections will be held based on the electoral rolls updated as of October 31.
