Maharashtra expands cooperative panel, adds sugar sector representation

The Government of Maharashtra has strengthened its committee reviewing the State’s Cooperative Policy by bringing in representation from the sugar sector, signalling a sharper focus on cooperative sugar factories in the reform process.

The high-level panel, headed by the State Cooperation Minister, has been formed to suggest changes in line with the National Cooperative Policy 2025. The committee is tasked with recommending measures to modernise and reinforce the cooperative movement across Maharashtra, where the sugar sector plays a key role.

In the latest development, Arvind Janardhan Gore, Chairman of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Cooperative Sugar Factory, has been inducted into the committee. His inclusion is expected to bring direct experience from the cooperative sugar industry, which remains central to the rural economy of the state.

Subhash Vitthal Mohite, former Chairman of Pune Peoples Co-operative Bank, has also been appointed to the panel, adding cooperative banking experience that supports sugar factories and other institutions.

With the sugar sector forming one of the strongest pillars of Maharashtra’s cooperative structure, the expanded committee is expected to examine steps to improve transparency, financial discipline and operational efficiency in cooperative sugar mills.

The new appointments have been notified through an official government order.
