Malaysia: Prime Minister Anwar urges people to lower sugar intake for better health

Butterworth: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to reduce their sugar consumption, warning that unhealthy eating habits are adding to the country’s growing health challenges, reports The Sun.

Speaking at Seberang Jaya Hospital on Thursday, Anwar said excessive sugar intake is one of the main reasons for the increasing strain on the public healthcare system. He noted that Malaysians consume some of the highest levels of sugar in Asia.

He said that while the government continues to spend heavily on healthcare services, greater emphasis must be placed on prevention by promoting healthier eating habits to reduce the risk of illness.

The Prime Minister stressed that public awareness efforts on cutting down sugar intake should be stepped up. He suggested that hospitals and government buildings should offer healthier food and beverage choices to set an example for the public.

Anwar also proposed restricting the availability of sugary drinks in hospitals and said official government events should serve food and drinks with low sugar content as part of public education efforts.

In addition, he said hospitals and clinics should put up clear posters and health messages to inform people about the risks linked to consuming too much sugar.

Commenting on the opening of the new hospital block, Anwar said it would strengthen healthcare services in Seberang Perai and reflects the government’s commitment to improving access to effective public healthcare.
