Malaysia: SD Guthrie starts B30 biodiesel pilot project on Carey Island

Kuala Lumpur: SD Guthrie Bhd has kicked off a pilot project to use B30 biodiesel for all its plantation operations on Carey Island in Selangor. The initiative will see the company switch all its machinery and diesel-powered vehicles on the island to B30 fuel—a blend made up of 30% palm oil-based methyl ester and 70% regular diesel, reported The Edge Malaysia.

The biodiesel for the project will be supplied from Petronas Dagangan Bhd’s terminal in Melaka.

While B30 is more expensive than the biodiesel blends currently in use, SD Guthrie hopes the project will serve as a stepping stone towards a nationwide adoption of B30. The move is expected to boost palm oil consumption and support the country’s long-term sustainability goals.

“We’re converting all our vehicles and machinery on Carey Island to B30 fuel to cut down on emissions and promote more responsible practices in the plantation industry,” said SD Guthrie Managing Director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha.

Malaysia introduced its B20 biodiesel mandate in 2020 and is rolling it out in stages across the country.
