New sugar production project to be launched in Mauritania

A new sugar production project will be launched in Mauritania’s Foum Gleita region early next year, the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Momma Ould Beibata, announced on Monday. The announcement was made during a meeting held at the headquarters of the Mauritanian Sugar and Derivatives Company, where officials and local farmers were present.

Under the high directives of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, it has been decided to implement this project within the framework of the partnership between the public and private sectors, after failing to find a company with the expertise and experience in the field ready to achieve the desired goals.

The Foum Gleita community, located in the M’Bout Department of the Gorgol region in northern Mauritania, was selected for the project due to its strong agricultural potential. The announcement was attended by the governor of Gorgol, Mohamed Mokhtar Ould Abdi, as well as Cheikh Abdullah Beddah, the General Delegate for National Solidarity and the Fight Against Exclusion.

Agriculture Minister pointed out that the choice of this region to establish a sugar project is not coincidental, but rather a result of the significant agricultural capabilities that the Foum Lkleita area possesses. He emphasized that the new sugar production company, which will launch in 2026, will create a suitable environment that will change the face of life and provide green job opportunities and local labor. It will also help achieve 80% self-sufficiency in our sugar needs.

He stated that the sugar production company in Foum Lekleita has become a tangible reality that must be worked on to benefit from its resources.
