Oman: RO 150 million sugar refinery to be inaugurated today

A modern sugar refinery will open on Monday, 15 December 2025, at Johar Port and Freezone, marking a significant boost to investment activity in the area and strengthening the Sultanate of Oman’s food security sector.

The new facility is expected to enhance the resilience of supply chains and support economic diversification, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

Located near Sohar Port, the project represents an investment exceeding RO 150 million. The refinery has successfully completed its trial operations and achieved Category 2 compliance under European standards, ahead of its planned transition to full commercial operations in January 2026.

The plant employs an advanced European refining system designed to improve production efficiency while maintaining high operational quality.

With an annual production capacity of one million tonnes, the facility is supported by extensive storage infrastructure capable of holding 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar and 70,000 tonnes of refined sugar, according to the media report.

These advanced capabilities reinforce Oman’s position as a regional hub for the processing, distribution and re-export of sugar.
