Pakistan: Government, sugar mills agree to conduct third party audit of sugar prices

In a significant step towards ensuring fair prices and market stability for sugar, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, under the leadership of Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, convened a follow-up meeting on Wednesday with sugar mill owners and other important parties involved in the sugar industry. The discussions focused on making sugar pricing more open and keeping the market steady, reports Dunya News.

As part of the discussions, all parties agreed to bring in an independent audit firm, approved by both sides, to assess sugar production costs. The goal is to create a transparent, evidence-based pricing model that can be used going forward.

In a move aimed at easing financial pressure on consumers ahead of Eidul Azha, sugar mill owners agreed to temporarily lower ex-mill sugar prices. Minister Hussain praised the decision, saying it reflected the industry’s willingness to act in the public interest.

A new pricing system, based on the results of the audit and mutual discussions, is expected to be finalized after the Eid holiday.

The minister stressed the government’s commitment to fair pricing, transparency, and protecting consumers from unfair market practices. He also called for continued cooperation between public institutions and private businesses to strengthen food security and prevent artificial inflation.

The Ministry said it would maintain a proactive role in monitoring key food items through policy guidance and regular engagement with stakeholders.
