Pakistan: Pyrilla causing damage to sugarcane crop, says Minister

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the recent outbreak of Pyrilla and Whitefly on sugarcane crops. The meeting was attended by agricultural experts and officials from relevant departments, reported The Nation.

The minister said Pyrilla has moved from northern areas to southern regions this year, damaging sugarcane fields, while Whitefly is also becoming a serious threat to production.

He said the government is engaging all concerned departments and spreading awareness among farmers to control the situation. Hussain urged farmers to keep a close watch on their crops and stay in regular contact with agriculture officers.

He also advised growers to use timely spraying of Imidacloprid to protect their fields. The minister added that only through joint efforts can sugarcane production be protected from these harmful pests.
