Pankaja Munde expresses dissatisfaction with the work of corporation meant for welfare of sugarcane workers

Maharashtra Environment Minister Pankaja Munde has voiced her dissatisfaction with the performance of the corporation set up for the welfare of sugarcane-cutting workers, stating that it needs to operate more effectively.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Munde said she had already raised the issue with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Her remarks came before she left to pay tribute at the memorial of her late father, Gopinath Munde, in Beed district on his death anniversary.

The Maharashtra government had established the Loknete Gopinath Munde Sugarcane Workers Welfare Corporation ahead of the 2019 Assembly elections. The corporation was aimed at offering social security measures, including Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), to sugarcane labourers.

“I am not happy with the way the corporation is functioning,” Munde said, reported PTI. “I’ve discussed it with the Chief Minister, and he has assured me that positive steps will be taken. I will discuss the issue with him once again”

She added that she had done all she could for sugarcane workers, including securing a 34% wage increase, the highest so far. “The corporation was formed to further improve facilities for these workers. It needs to work more efficiently,” she emphasized.
