Ludhiana: A road safety awareness and training camp was organsied at Nahar sugar mill in Amloh, near Khanna to mark the Road Safety Week, reported Babushahi.com.
The camp was organised by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to promote safe road and farming practices and around 50 farmers attended it. The focus of the programme was road safety and the safe use of farm machinery.
The camp was led by Dr Shiv Kumar Lohan, Associate Professor and Co-Principal Investigator of the All India Coordinated Project on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture and Allied Sectors, along with Dr Anand Gautam, Assistant Professor. The sessions aimed to reduce accidents and improve the overall safety of farmers during farm and transport activities.
Dr Lohan spoke about the need for safety measures on farm vehicles, including the use of slow-moving vehicle signs, protective frames on tractors, proper braking systems on tractor-trailers, and rear lights on trolleys to improve visibility on roads.
Dr Gautam drew attention to the importance of safety equipment on farm machines such as threshers and chaff cutters, and explained how proper safety fittings can help prevent accidents during operation.
To support these safety messages, the organisers fitted slow-moving vehicle signs, reflective tapes and LED lights free of cost on more than 50 tractor-trolleys. These vehicles are commonly used to transport sugarcane to mills during the peak harvesting period from December to March.
Dr Manjeet Singh, Head of the Department, said farmers can contact the department to obtain reflective tapes for their vehicles. Anuj Malik, Deputy Cane Manager at Nahar Sugar Mill, appreciated PAU’s efforts to raise awareness about farm machinery safety.
Farmers who attended the programme welcomed the initiative and said it helped them better understand the importance of safety in both farming and transportation activities. The programme highlighted PAU’s ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and encourage safer practices among the farming community.
