Pawar calls for commission to address sugar cooperative decline in Maharashtra

Former Union Minister Sharad Pawar has called upon Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to establish a commission tasked with investigating the growing challenges faced by sugar cooperatives in the state. Pawar highlighted a significant shift in ownership, with private entities now holding 50% of the sector, down from 80% cooperative ownership, reports Indian Cooperative.

Speaking at a symposium commemorating International Cooperative Day, Pawar stressed the necessity for robust policy support to safeguard the cooperative sugar industry. He argued that a detailed study of the sector’s difficulties is crucial to formulate effective solutions.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar voiced similar concerns, advocating for stringent measures against individuals who misuse cooperative institutions. He also criticized the trend of some individuals joining ruling political parties to avoid scrutiny.

Both leaders underscored the vital contribution of the cooperative sector to Maharashtra’s economy, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms to bolster its resilience and ensure its continued success.
