Punjab: Farmers discuss ownership transfer of sugar mill

Amritsar: Leaders of farmer organisations associated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha met with officials from two cooperative sugar mills to discuss the proposed transfer of the closed Cooperative Sugar Mill in Sheron to another department, The Tribune reported.

The meeting, held at the initiative of Deputy Commissioner Rahul, brought together General Managers Subhash Chander of the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Ajnala, and Gurvinder Pal Singh of the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Bhogpur, along with farmersтАЩ representatives Mehar Singh Sakhira, Nachhattar Singh Mughalchak, Daljit Singh Dayalpura, Mukhtar Singh Malla, Manjit Singh Baggu, and Tarsem Singh Lohar.

During the discussions, officials said that the government had already initiated steps to transfer ownership of the Sheron mill and could not provide any guarantees to the farmers. The farmer leaders, however, remained firm in their opposition, warning that they would launch a strong protest if the transfer moves forward.

The Sheron sugar mill has been a point of contention for over 16 years, with farmer organisations repeatedly demanding that its ownership remain protected and not be handed over to any other institution. Despite their long-standing efforts, their appeals have so far been unsuccessful.
