Jalandhar: A meeting was held today under the leadership of SDM Jashanjit Singh to discuss the financial troubles faced by sugarcane farmers during the current crushing season. The session ended with a clear assurance from the sugar mill’s management that all pending payments to farmers would be made within the next two weeks, reports The Tribune.
The meeting was attended by several important figures, including Phagwara Sugar Mills General Manager Amrik Singh Buttar and Manager BP Verma. Farmer leaders Satnam Sahni from the Bhartiya Kisan Union and Kirpal Singh from the Farmers’ Union also took part, along with government officials such as the Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar Gurucharan Singh.
During the discussion, the farmer representatives raised serious concerns about the continued delay in receiving payments for their sugarcane. They pointed out that many farmers are facing financial hardship, especially at a time when the cost of agricultural supplies is rising.
The sugar mill officials admitted the delay and explained that it was caused by short-term financial difficulties. However, they firmly promised that all dues would be paid within fifteen days. They also reassured the farmers that they are committed to clearing the payments and staying in regular contact to avoid future misunderstandings.
Naib Tehsildar Gurucharan Singh stressed the need for timely payments and said that the district administration will keep a close eye on the progress. He also made it clear that action would be taken if the sugar mill fails to meet its promise.
