Rabuka announces Parliamentary Committee to revive Fiji’s sugar industry

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee on the Sugar Industry, calling it a crucial and timely move to protect the livelihoods of thousands of Fijians, reports The Fiji Times.

Speaking at the launch of the Prime Minister’s Sugar Cane Farmers Awards in Lautoka this week, Mr Rabuka reaffirmed the Coalition government’s commitment to transforming the sugar sector into a modern, sustainable, and resilient industry.

“I am personally chairing the Select Committee on the Sugar Industry, which will carry out a full review and present recommendations for its transformation and long-term sustainability,” he said. “This is not just a formality but an urgent step to safeguard livelihoods, restore confidence, and secure the future of one of the most historically important sectors of our economy.”

Mr Rabuka highlighted that the sugar industry has been more than an economic pillar for over a century, describing it as “the social and cultural lifeblood of our nation.” He praised the resilience of farmers who have endured natural disasters and market challenges, remaining steadfast in their contribution to national growth.

“As we approach 55 years of independence, it is only right that we reflect on this sector and the people who have played a key role in shaping our nation’s progress,” he added.

The Prime Minister also commended Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh for steering the industry toward recovery. He said the government’s goal of increasing sugar production by 200,000 tonnes each year is realistic and within reach, even in its first year of implementation.

“This progress reflects the hard work of our farmers and millers, the government’s commitment, and the strong support of our stakeholders,” Mr Rabuka said.
