Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh: Rakesh Tikait, the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), expressed dissatisfaction with the Rs. 15 per quintal sugarcane price increase announced by the central government. Tikait argued that this hike would only benefit states where the state governments do not set the sugarcane price themselves.
He explained that in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, the sugarcane price is determined by the respective state governments. Therefore, the central government’s announcement is not of significant importance to these states. Tikait called on the Uttar Pradesh government to set the sugarcane price on par with that of Punjab, reported Dainik Bhaskar.
In Uttar Pradesh, sugarcane is fixed by state government as State Advisory Price (SAP).
Cane SAP in the state remained same during the ongoing 2024-25 cane crushing season. In January 2024, the UP government raised the SAP for all sugarcane varieties by Rs 20 per quintal. The SAP for early-maturing varieties was increased from Rs 350 to Rs 370 per quintal, for common varieties from Rs 340 to Rs 360, and for late-maturing varieties from Rs 335 to Rs 355 per quintal.
The central government has approved a Rs. 15 per quintal increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2025–26 crushing season. With this hike, the new FRP stands at Rs. 355 per quintal, up from the existing Rs. 340 per quintal, based on a 10.25% sugar recovery rate.
