Amritsar: A seminar was held at the Cooperative Sugar Mill in Ajnala to support farmers in increasing yield and sugar recovery from spring sugarcane. The event was organised jointly with the Regional Research Station, Kapurthala, of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), The Tribune reported.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Sugarfed Punjab Managing Director Dr. Senu Duggal as part of an initiative to educate growers on better sowing methods.
Discussions during the seminar stressed the importance of expanding the area under spring sugarcane, using modern techniques, promoting early-maturing and high-recovery varieties, and adopting mechanisation to address labour shortages.
Specialists from PAU provided practical guidance to the farmers. Plant breeder Dr. Navdeep Singh Jamwal spoke about suitable varieties and crop planning to improve output and recovery rates. Crop scientist Dr. Jashanjot Kaur explained scientific farming practices, weed control, and ratoon crop management to help raise productivity. Entomologist Dr. Rajinder Kumar also informed participants about key pest risks and effective control measures.
General Manager of Ajnala Sugar Mill, Shubhash Chander, encouraged farmers to adopt improved technologies and high-recovery varieties to enhance their earnings.
