Seohara (Uttar Pradesh): A farmers’ meeting was held on Tuesday in Salaraabad village under the joint initiative of the Sugarcane Development Department and the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Modipuram, which functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, reported Amar Ujala.
During the meeting, scientists and officials stressed the need to promote mixed cropping of potato and other crops along with sugarcane to increase farm income and boost sugarcane production. They highlighted that combining crops with sugarcane can also help improve soil fertility.
CPRI Modipuram principal scientist Dr Sanjay Rawal and chief technical officer Dr Ashok Kumar Chauhan said that growing potatoes alongside sugarcane is highly beneficial for raising farmers’ earnings and maintaining soil health. Agricultural scientists Dr K.K. Singh and Dr Pintu Kumar advised farmers to adopt organic farming practices.
Farmers were also encouraged to include at least three new and improved sugarcane varieties during the spring sowing season. District Sugarcane Officer P.N. Singh shared information about urad and moong seeds being provided by the agriculture department for mixed cropping with spring sugarcane, and urged farmers to adopt mixed cropping over larger areas.
