Shamli: Urea meant for farmers seized at ethanol unit; case registered

Shamli: A case of alleged illegal use of urea fertilizer, intended for agricultural use by farmers, has been uncovered at the ethanol unit of sugar mill in Shamli. A team of three officials, formed by the District Magistrate (DM), raided the unit late Wednesday night and seized six full sacks and around ten empty sacks of urea, reported Amar Ujala.

Following the raid, District Agriculture Officer Pradeep Kumar filed an official complaint at the Jhinjhana police station against the ethanol unit’s management.

Acting on a tip-off that urea meant for farm use was being used at the ethanol unit, DM Arvind Kumar Chauhan formed a special team comprising District Agriculture Officer Pradeep Kumar, Tehsildar Unn Mridula, and CO Thanabhawan Jitendra Singh. The team conducted the raid at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. During the inspection, they found six full sacks and ten empty sacks of urea fertilizer typically supplied to farmers, as per the local media report.

The seized urea and other items were handed over to police custody at the Jhinjhana police station. The investigation report was submitted to the DM, who approved further action. Based on this, an FIR was lodged against the ethanol unit’s management.

However, the company denied the allegations.

“The accusation that we bought urea from farmers for use at the plant is baseless. This is an attempt to malign the image of the mill,” said Avneesh Chaudhary, Unit Head of Superior Food Grains Private Limited, Unn.

According to the in-charge of Jhinjhana police station, an FIR has been registered based on the complaint filed by the agriculture officer.

The complaint states that neem-coated urea, which is meant strictly for farming, was being used illegally at the ethanol plant, where only technical-grade urea is permitted.
