Sri Lanka: Government sets sugarcane purchase rates

In an appeal to sugarcane farmers, Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti urged them not to be misled by political agendas. He also warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who deliberately sets fire to sugarcane fields, emphasizing that burnt cane becomes unusable, reported Daily Mirror.

Handunnetti pointed out that one ton of burnt sugarcane will be purchased at Rs. 5,000, while a ton of raw (unburnt) sugarcane will be bought at Rs. 9,000.

On the distribution and commercialization front, the government has developed plans to sell sugar in 1 kg packs through official outlets. In addition, it is exploring corporate packaging options and gearing up for exports.
