Islamabad: Sugar prices in Pakistan have reached an all-time high, with rates soaring to Rs200 per kilogram in several major cities, despite recent government efforts to stabilise the market by allowing sugar imports, reported Dunya News.
In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sugar is now being sold at Rs 200 per kg, with the average price in both cities exceeding Rs 196. Karachi has followed suit, also recording a maximum price of Rs200 per kg, while the city’s average stands at Rs 192.54, according to the latest market data.
Other cities are seeing a similar rise. In Larkana, sugar is retailing at Rs195 per kg. Sialkot and Lahore are reporting average prices of Rs 192 per kg, while in Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur, and Peshawar, the rate is around Rs 190 per kg. Bannu, Quetta, and Khuzdar are slightly lower, with prices ranging from Rs 185 to Rs190 per kg.
Nationwide, the average price of sugar has climbed to Rs 188.44 per kg, as per the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. With many areas now breaching the Rs 200 mark, frustration among consumers continues to mount.
Despite the government’s recent decision to permit sugar imports to address the crisis, prices show no signs of stabilising. Many consumers and analysts blame hoarding and profiteering for the unchecked price hike, while also pointing to a lack of effective market regulation and enforcement.
Calls for swift government intervention are growing louder, with citizens demanding accountability and relief from the steep rise in this essential commodity.
