Sugar season 2025–26: Farmers in Maharashtra await Rs 4,601 crore dues

Kolhapur: Sugar mills in Maharashtra have disbursed 86.34% of the total Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) to farmers for the 2025–26 season, with Rs 29,096 crore deposited directly into farmers’ bank accounts, according to the Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate. The total payable amount is Rs 33,697 crore, leaving Rs 4,601 crore still pending from sugar mills. The Commissionerate stated that the amount cleared by mills may include payments up to February 14.

The latest FRP report from the Sugar Commissionerate noted that, as of February 15, 2026, payments were calculated for sugarcane crushed up to January 31. By that date, 206 sugar mills had processed about 870.11 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in total dues of Rs 33,697 crore. Sugar mills have so far paid Rs 29,096 crore, which includes harvesting and transportation costs, leaving the remaining amount unpaid.

Only 49 of the 206 sugar mills have paid the full FRP. Meanwhile, 58 mills have cleared between 80% and 99% of the dues, 58 mills have paid between 60% and 79%, and 41 mills have paid between 0% and 59%. Overall, 157 mills account for the pending Rs 4,601 crore owed to farmers.

The pending amount of Rs 4,601 crore is expected to be cleared within the next fortnight. The Sugar Commissionerate will hold hearings with the concerned mills, review their explanations, and take further action on the overdue payments.
