Sugarcane growing area increases in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh: Though sugarcane farmers are facing problems to get their pending cane arrears, still they prefer sugarcane cultivation in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The recent survey done by the district administration reveals that the area under sugarcane cultivation has increased to 1.6567 lakh hectares this year.

District Cane Officer R D Dwivedi said, “A survey by the sugarcane department showed that the sugarcane growing area has increased to 1.6567 lakh hectare in the district this year, from 1.4729 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.”

Speaking about India, there has been no impact of COVID-19 on the progress of area coverage under kharif crops. As on 17 July 2020, total kharif crops have been sown on 691.86 lakh ha area against 570.86 lakh ha area during the corresponding period of last year, thus increase in area coverage by 21.20 per cent compared to last year in the country. Farmers have sown sugarcane on 51.29 lakh ha area against 50.82 lakh ha area last year i.e. increase in area coverage by 0.92 per cent.
