Coimbatore: The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute (ICAR-SBI) in Coimbatore is organizing a training programme titled ‘Sugarcane Farming for Prosperity’ for tribal sugarcane farmers from Salem district on July 09.
The event is part of the institute’s continued efforts to support tribal communities by introducing them to improved agricultural methods and practical farming knowledge.
Alongside the training, a special interaction session between farmers and scientists is planned for the same day. This session will also include participants from the Farm School on All India Radio, and will provide an opportunity to discuss challenges faced in the field and explore practical solutions.
The programme is being conducted under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribe Component (DAPSTC), an initiative led by ICAR-SBI. This project has been implemented in several tribal regions, including the Anamalai and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserves, the Eastern Ghats in Salem, and the Attappady hills of Kerala. The initiative aims to improve the lives of tribal communities through training and hands-on support in agriculture, reported Dinamalar.
During the training, farmers will visit demonstration plots where they can see new sugarcane varieties, modern farming equipment, and models for integrated farming. A tour of the institute’s museum is also included in the schedule.
As part of the event, a Tamil booklet titled ‘Sugarcane Farming for Prosperity’ and a short film about the progress and impact of the DAPSTC project will be launched.
The training will be inaugurated by Shri M.G. Ganesan, Project Director of Project Nilgiri Tahr. Tribal farmers from Salem and participants from All India Radio’s Farm School are expected to take part in the programme.
