Jagtial, Telangana: Farmers and opposition party leaders came together in Metpalli on Thursday, calling for the reopening of the Muthyampet sugar factory in Mallapur mandal, reported, The New Indian Express.
The roundtable meeting was attended by leaders from BRS, CPM, Samajwadi Party, and farmers’ unions. A resolution was passed urging the state government to fulfil its promise made in the Congress manifesto and to act on the recommendations of the Sridhar Babu Committee for reviving the factory.
Congress senior leader T. Jeevan Reddy announced that a representation would soon be submitted to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on the issue.
Farmers pointed out that sugarcane is currently being cultivated on about 15,000 acres and said the reopening of the factory would give them much-needed confidence. They stressed the need for new machinery to replace the rusted units, which they believe would improve cultivation and benefit the farming community.
The meeting also decided to form sugarcane farmers’ associations to strengthen the demand. Participants highlighted that the Muthyampet factory, once among the largest in the Korutla and Metpalli regions, is crucial for local agriculture. With the factory closed, farmers are forced to transport their cane to Kamareddy and Nizamabad, increasing costs and difficulties.
