Tripura govt in talks with business group to set up bamboo-based ethanol production facility

Agartala: The state government is in discussions with a business group to set up a bamboo-based ethanol plant, Chief Minister Manik Saha said, Northeast Now reported.

The move is aimed at expanding industrial activity in the state, he said.

Speaking after inaugurating the 36th Tripura Industries and Commerce Fair at the Hapania International Fair Ground, Saha said Tripura’s large availability of bamboo makes it suitable for such a project. He, however, did not reveal the name of the company involved or give any timeframe for the proposed facility.

Referring to the state’s resource potential, the chief minister said Tripura offers strong opportunities for industrial growth, especially in areas linked to bamboo, cane, pineapple, agarwood and rubber. He also said the state recently signed memoranda of understanding worth about Rs 3,800 crore at a business conclave organised to attract new investments.

The Industries and Commerce Fair, organised by the state’s Industries and Commerce Department, will run until February 12, Saha said. During the inaugural programme, several companies that have committed to investing in Tripura were acknowledged.

The chief minister said investment inflows into the state have picked up over the past few years, crediting policy reforms, incentives for investors, skill development programmes and ongoing dialogue with industry representatives.

State officials said Tripura has the potential to build agarwood-based industries with an estimated value of nearly Rs 2,000 crore. The fair has around 580 stalls set up by exhibitors from within the state, other parts of the country and overseas. Selected self-help groups and non-governmental organisations have been given space free of cost.

The state’s industries and commerce minister, the industries secretary and other senior officials attended the event.
