UK to raise soft drinks industry levy from April 1

Taxes on sugary drinks in the United Kingdom will rise from next month, as part of the government’s efforts to curb childhood obesity, Three FM reported.

The increase relates to the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, which applies to soft drinks containing five grams or more of sugar per 100 millilitres.

From Wednesday, April 1, the standard rate of the levy will go up from £1.94 to £2.08 per 10 litres of drink produced.

The government said the rise is intended to encourage manufacturers to reduce the amount of added sugar in their products, with the aim of improving children’s health and reducing obesity levels.
