UP: 104 sugar mills begin crushing operations; 29 mills disburse Rs 513.96 crore in cane payments

Sugar mills across Uttar Pradesh have begun paying farmers for the ongoing 2025–26 crushing season, with 29 mills so far transferring Rs. 513.96 crore directly into the bank accounts of cane growers, an official statement released on Thursday said.

The Cane Development Department reported that 114 sugar mills in the state have issued indents for cane procurement, while crushing operations have officially started at 104 mills. Officials noted that most mills are disbursing payments to farmers on a weekly basis.

Senior officials of the Cane Development Department have instructed all district officers to promptly submit inspection reports on the setup of cane purchase centres for 23 cooperative mills and three corporation-owned mills.

They have also been directed to ensure timely procurement and lifting of cane, and to carry out surprise inspections to confirm the presence of weighment clerks at the centres.

Further guidelines mandate the availability of standard weights at weighbridges, accuracy in weighing, and the supply of clean cane to the mills.

The statement added that officers have been asked to ensure swift resolution of farmer complaints in accordance with regulations.
