Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): The Yogi Adityanath-led cabinet in Uttar Pradesh has given approval of Rs. 261.91 crore for the expansion, technological upgrade, and modernization of Morna sugar mill. Officials say this decision is not just about a single project but represents a long-awaited solution for thousands of sugarcane farmers in Morna, Mirapur, and surrounding areas.
In the first phase, its crushing capacity will be raised from the existing 2,500 tonnes of cane per day (TCD) to 3,500 TCD. In the next stage, the capacity will be further expanded to 5,000 TCD.
According to the cabinet, the decision aims to cut down losses caused by the current plant, which is old and in poor condition and runs on outdated technology. The proposed mill, equipped with modern systems, is expected to run more efficiently and generate profits.
The cabinet said the move will directly help sugarcane farmers in the Morna area who supply cane to the Ganga Kisan Cooperative Sugar Mill. It added that the new plant would support efforts to increase farmers’ income and ensure they receive payments for their crops on time.
The decision is seen as an important step for the state’s sugar industry, especially in western Uttar Pradesh, where sugarcane plays a central role in the rural economy.
Cooperative sugar mills in the state have long faced difficulties in competing with private mills, mainly due to operational weaknesses and delays in clearing farmers’ dues.
