UP sugar mills defaulting on cane payments may face review of area allocation for next crushing season

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: In a firm move to ensure timely payments to sugarcane farmers, Pramod Kumar Upadhyay, the state’s Cane and Sugar Commissioner, has initiated strict action against sugar mills that have failed to clear cane dues. Recovery certificates, known as ‘RCs,’ have been issued against six defaulting sugar mills.

The Cane Commissioner emphasized that ensuring farmers receive their payments on time is a top priority for the government. Following this directive, action has been taken against mills in Barkhera (Pilibhit), Maqsoodapur (Shahjahanpur), Baheri and Nawabganj (Bareilly), Kundarkhi (Gonda), and Malakpur (Baghpat). These mills reportedly failed to make timely sugarcane payments despite repeated instructions.

He also indicated that sugar mills consistently negligent in payments might face a review of their sugarcane area allocation for the upcoming crushing season.

He further reported that out of 122 operational sugar mills in the state during the 2024-25 crushing season, 65 mills have already made 100% of their sugarcane payments, while 22 mills have paid over 84%. The status of sugarcane payments is being monitored daily at the headquarters level. The steps, taken in the interest of farmers, is seen as a crucial effort to ensure transparency and punctuality in sugarcane price payments.
