Gorakhpur: Calling the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to raise the sugarcane price by ₹30 per quintal a historic and farmer-friendly step, BJP Kisan Morcha state president Kameshwar Singh said the move reflects Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s commitment to ensuring farmers’ prosperity and well-being, reports The Times of India.
Addressing the media in Gorakhpur on Wednesday, Singh accused previous BSP and SP governments of neglecting farmers and selling 21 sugar mills at nominal prices. In contrast, he said, the governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have introduced multiple initiatives aimed at doubling farmers’ income.
Singh noted that over the past eight and a half years, the Yogi administration has invested ₹12,000 crore to revive six closed sugar mills, establish four new ones, and expand the capacity of 42 existing mills.
With the latest price hike, the state government has raised sugarcane prices by a total of ₹85 per quintal during its tenure. The new rate now stands at ₹400 per quintal for early varieties and ₹390 per quintal for general varieties.
According to Singh, the decision will bring an additional ₹3,000 crore in income to sugarcane farmers and further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position as the country’s leading state in sugarcane cultivation and processing.
