The Uttar Pradesh government is undertaking a major initiative to enhance the income of sugarcane farmers and increase sugar production by expanding and modernizing several sugar mills across the state. Under this ambitious project, the crushing capacity of sugar mills in Gajraula, Baghpat, Morna, and Semikhera is being upgraded, while the Rudra Bilaspur sugar mill is set to undergo technical enhancements. A total investment of Rs. 1,967 crores has been allocated for these projects.
As part of this initiative, Gajraula and Baghpat sugar mills are expanding their capacity from 2,500 TCD to 4,900 TCD, with allocations of Rs 545.52 crore and Rs 570 crore, respectively.
Morna Sugar Mill is upgraded from 2,500 TCD to 3,500 TCD in the first phase. By April 30, a DPR for its second phase expansion to 5,000 TCD will be submitted.
The Semikhera Cooperative sugar mill will increase its crushing capacity from 2,750 TCD to 3,500 TCD. This expansion will facilitate easier sugarcane crushing for farmers in the area, leading to an increase in their income.
The Rudra Bilaspur sugar mill is undergoing a technical upgrade at an investment of Rs. 75 crores. This project will incorporate modern machinery and technologies, enhancing both production capacity and quality, as per reports.
To ensure effective management and transparency in sugar mill operations, the government is implementing IT interventions. This includes the digitization of inventory management and procurement, the development of an online system for molasses sales and sugarcane management, and the installation of GPS monitoring devices on sugarcane transport vehicles to improve supply chain oversight.
