Uttar Pradesh: Kamalapur sugar mill to restart after 17 years; trial crushing approved

Sitapur: The long-closed Kamalapur sugar mill is set to resume operations after nearly 17 years, with authorities granting permission for a trial sugarcane crushing during the current season, Bhaskar reported.

The mill, earlier operated as Kamalapur Sugar and Industries Limited, had shut down in 2009. It was later purchased in an auction in 2017 by NR Infracon Private Limited, but technical issues delayed its reopening.

Officials said the factory has now received the required approval to begin crushing operations. After completing repair work, the management has requested the administration to allocate sugarcane for a trial run during the remaining period of the 2025–26 crushing season. The state sugar commissioner has permitted the mill to conduct the trial.

If the test run is successful, the factory is expected to begin full-scale crushing from the next season.

The revival of the mill is expected to benefit around 15,000 sugarcane farmers in the region. Sources said the restart could create direct employment for nearly 500 people, while another 1,500 to 2,000 people may find indirect work.

Meanwhile, the company’s management has given written consent to clear pending cane payments and development contributions related to the 2006–07, 2007–08 and 2008–09 crushing seasons.

The sugar commissioner has directed District Magistrate Dr Raja Ganapati R to set up a committee to oversee the payment of these outstanding dues, offering relief to farmers who have been waiting for their payments for several years.
