Uttar Pradesh paid Rs 3 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers in nine years, says CM

Sugarcane farmers in the state received payments worth Rs 2.14 lakh crore during the 17-year period from 2000 to 2017. In contrast, the government has transferred Rs 3 lakh crore directly into farmers’ accounts over the past nine years – Rs 86,000 crore more than the earlier period, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, Dainik Jagran reported.

Addressing the State Credit Seminar and the release of the State Focus Paper 2026–27 at Lok Bhavan on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that Uttar Pradesh leads the country in ethanol and sugar production, highlighting significant financial support provided to sugarcane farmers in recent years.

He also noted that Uttar Pradesh has risen from eighth place to become the country’s second-largest economy.

The Chief Minister said the government and farmers are jointly exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in agriculture. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an AI agriculture platform was announced in the Union Budget, and Uttar Pradesh is moving quickly in that direction. Several Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) were also honored during the event.

He added that diesel and petrol are available at the lowest prices in the country in Uttar Pradesh and that the state’s agricultural growth rate has increased from 8 percent to over 18 percent.

Despite accounting for 17 percent of India’s population and having only 11 percent of the country’s cultivable land, the state’s farmers contribute 21 percent of the nation’s total foodgrain production, he said.
