Uttar Pradesh: Preparations begin to restart Kaptanganj sugar mill

Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh: In a major relief to farmers, the Kanoria sugar mill in Kaptanganj, which had been shut for the past three years, has cleared all pending sugarcane payments. During the 2021–22 crushing season, the mill owed Rs 44 crore to farmers. After the issuance of revenue recovery certificates (RRCs), this amount rose to Rs 77 crore, reported Dainik Bhaskar.

The delayed payments had pushed many farmers into financial distress. Some were relying on Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans, while others were surviving on daily wages under the MGNREGA scheme. Several farmers had also received legal notices from banks due to unpaid loans.

Concerned by the situation, Member of Parliament Vijay Dubey, local MLA Vinay Prakash Gond, and Atul Singh, Vice-Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Cow Welfare Commission, raised the issue directly with the Chief Minister. Acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions, local authorities took strict action, which led to the mill owner making the full payment on Saturday.

Rakesh Saxena, Executive Chairman of the sugar mill, confirmed that preparations have begun to restart the mill. He stated that the revival will happen with the support of the farmers, as per the news report.

Farmers, including Anand Mishra, Golu Mishra, Madhusudan Mishra, and Yogendra Singh, have welcomed the decision and expressed hope that the mill’s reopening will bring stability to the region’s sugarcane economy.
