Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane area declines in Bareilly

Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh: The survey of the sugarcane crop in the district has been completed, revealing a decline in the area under cultivation. Following the survey, officials from the District Cane Office (DCO) and field staff have begun visiting villages to present the results directly to farmers, reports Amar Ujala.

The survey, conducted between May 1 and June 30, showed that sugarcane is currently grown on 1,01,321 hectares, down from 1,07,770 hectares last year. Even then, sugar mills were unable to meet their cane requirements and had to stop operations early. This year, the cultivated area has declined further by 6,449 hectares.

District Cane Officer (DCO) Dilip Saini stated that, following the completion of the crop survey, his teams are now visiting villages to share the survey and allocation data with farmers. They are also informing farmers of last year’s supply base quota. In addition, teams are updating farmers’ mobile numbers and bank account details.

Despite the drop in cultivation area, DCO claims there is rise in the number of sugarcane farmers. “Although the crop area is smaller this year, the number of sugarcane farmers has grown,” he said. According to him, 3,100 new farmers have registered for sugarcane cultivation this year.

A total of 168 teams have been deployed, each equipped with a 63-point form. If a farmer is dissatisfied with the survey data, team members are recording their objections on an official copy. Farmers are also being given a copy of the survey report for their reference. This awareness and data-sharing campaign will continue in the villages until August 30.

Once all objections related to the current survey and last year’s allocation data are resolved, the Cane Department will publish the official calendar online by September 10. If farmers still have unresolved issues related to their sugarcane crops, a special 10-day help camp will be held at the committee level in September to address them.
