Speaking at the inauguration of the International Sugar Expo 2025 during the 83rd Centennial Annual Convention of the Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI), Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed that India will finalise the standard for 27% ethanol blending by the end of August.
Gadkari emphasized that while India has achieved almost 20 per cent ethanol blending as per the target, Brazil has already reached 27 per cent. However, India does not yet have a standard for 27 per cent ethanol blending. “I conveyed the same to the Secretary under Minister Pralhad Joshi. Today, I was informed that the standard for 27 per cent ethanol will be fixed by the end of August,” he said.
He highlighted ethanol’s growing importance to both the industry and the nation’s energy goals. “Industry has benefited significantly from ethanol,” Gadkari stated, underlining its role in reducing fuel imports, enhancing energy security, and providing new income avenues for farmers.
“Farmers are the most important pillars and our main priority is to ensure their well-being and steady income,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting rural livelihoods through biofuel initiatives.

Looking ahead, Gadkari expressed his ambition for full-scale ethanol blending in India. “We will ensure 100% ethanol blending. That’s my goal. This will also ensure long-term sustainability of the sugar industry.”
In a forward-looking message to the industry, he also encouraged stakeholders to explore other clean energy alternatives. “The sugar industry should also pay attention to Bio-CNG,” he added, highlighting the potential of compressed biogas as a complementary clean energy solution.
The International Sugar Expo 2025, being held alongside the Convention, will showcase cutting-edge technologies and solutions by 115 leading technology providers from India and overseas. Exhibits will cover a wide range of areas including sugar machinery, ethanol production, co-generation power, green hydrogen, pollution control, and agri-equipment.
