20 per cent ethanol blended petrol may be available from Dec or Jan next year

Petrol with 20 per cent ethanol blending will be available from December or January next year, ahead of the April 2023 target, said Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “We are continuously taking a review of the ethanol production status in the country and I am sure that we will achieve the target of 20% EBP by December or January ahead of our set target of April 2023.”

“The ultimate objective of our government is to ensure that flex-fuel vehicles run on the roads,” he said.

The government is working on resolving the technical issues to achieve this target.

“We will soon hold a meeting with automobile manufacturers on ethanol blending,” he said.

“India needs 1000 crore litre of ethanol to achieve the set target of 20% ethanol blending with petrol and we have advanced our deadline for blending 20% ethanol from 2030 to 2025. So far 450 crore litre of ethanol is being produced and tenders for 400 crore litres have been issued which indicate that we have sufficient ethanol for 20% blending,” Minister further added.
