2021-22 season: Maharashtra may surpass Uttar Pradesh in sugar production

Mumbai: The satisfactory rainfall and the increase in the area under cane cultivation are likely to take Maharashtra at the top position in sugar production in the 2021-22 crushing season.

According to the news report published in Hindustantimes.com, the sugar output in Maharashtra is expected to be at 11.2 million tonnes whereas the existing top producer Uttar Pradesh is estimated to produce 11.1 mn tonnes of sugar.

“Maharashtra was always the leading producer of sugar in the country but since 2016-17 UP had surpassed the state due to several reasons including the development of quality varieties of cane. But this year again, Maharashtra is estimated to surpass UP,” said a senior official from the sugar commissionerate.

In a recent meeting organised by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to discuss the issues related to the forthcoming cane crushing season, the sugar commissioner office has estimated bumper output. The area under cane cultivation has increased from 1.14 million hectares in 2020-21 to 1.23 million hectares. This will help in increasing sugar production to 11.2 million tonnes.
