Lahore: Sugar mills in Punjab province have produced 2.329 million tons of refined sugar by crushing 24.89 million tons of sugarcane during the ongoing crushing season 2025-26, reports Business Recorder.
This marks an increase of 2.66 lakh tonnes of refined sugar compared with production in the previous season.
The government’s efforts to ensure ensured uninterrupted crushing operations at 41 sugar mills across the province has helped in increasing sugar output, said Dr Kiran Khurshid, Secretary for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
She said more than Rs229.46 billion has already been paid to sugarcane farmers, covering 92.57 per cent of total payments due this season. During the previous season, payments at the same stage stood at 87.81 per cent.
Dr Khurshid said sugar prices at mills currently range between Rs138 and Rs148 per kilogram, while market prices are between Rs145 and Rs160 per kilogram, with enough sugar available for consumers.
She added that the Punjab government is working to ensure sugar is sold at official prices. Action against hoarding and overpricing is continuing, with cases filed against 501 people and 4,029 arrests made for illegal profit-taking. She said the government is committed to ensuring full payment to sugarcane farmers so they receive their dues on time and can maintain their livelihoods.
