Sugar millers to meet tomorrow

Kolhapur: The sugar millers from Kolhapur district will be meeting district collector to discuss the issue of crushing of sugarcane crop which got damaged in the recent floods. The collector has convened the meeting in this regard on Wednesday afternoon and he will take a review of the situation.

Last year the district suffered heavy losses due to severe floods. The sugarcane crop grown on the banks of the rivers were submerged and completely damaged. When cane crushing began, the millers were reluctant to cut damaged cane for crushing.

Sugarcane farmers claim the delay in cutting sugar cane in the flood-affected areas is badly affecting its recovery, resulting in financial losses. District collector sent notices to mills but still, the issue is pending. In Wednesday’s meeting, various issues regarding cane cutting will be discussed.

Recently, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS), warned sugar mills in the district to cut and crush the Sugarcane damaged due to floods by January end, else they will shut down the mills. Jalinder Patil, state president of SSS met district collector Daulat Desai and pointed out the mills are not following directives issued by him to cut cane from the flood-affected area on a priority basis.
