Ahead of cane crushing season, sugarcane workers demand hike in wages

As the new crushing season is around the corner, the sugarcane workers from Maharashtra have demanded a hike in the wages. The workers claim that the coronavirus pandemic has affected their financial conditions.

DL Karad, president, Sugarcane Cutters and Transport Workers Union and vice president said, “The wages of workers should be hiked before the start of the season as the Covid pandemic has hit the workers hard.”

Currently, the workers get wages of Rs 280 per tonne but they have demanded to hike the wages to Rs 400 per tonne.

According to the media report, Shrirang Bhange, president, Maharashtra Rajya Ustod Kamgar Vahtuk Sanghatana also demanded that the workers should be given wages of Rs 400 per tonne
