Algeria to impose VAT tax on sugar to reduce imports

Algiers: Taking a step to lower the import of sweetener, Algeria will impose a 9 per cent value-added tax on white and raw sugar from early next year, said Prime Minister Ayman Benabderahmane.

The member of the OPEC, Algeria, aims to bring down imports on food and other goods in a bid to narrow budget and trade deficits.

Speaking in Parliament Benabderrahmane said, “Algeria is ranked among the top importers as the country imports around 2 million tonnes of sugar annually.”
