Around 28.5 lakh tonnes of sugar diverted to ethanol production

Coimbatore: As per the update released by ISMA, the sugar diverted for ethanol production from October 2022 to February 2023 has been highest at 28.5 lakh tonnes compared with 21.9 lakh tonnes during the same period in the preceding year, reports The Hindu.

Between October and February this season as many as 528 sugar mills produced 257.6 lakh tonnes of sugar as per the sugar production update issued by the Indian Sugar Mills’ Association as against 253 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last season, after diverting sugar for ethanol. During five months of the current season, around 28.5 lakh tonnes of sugar has been diverted for ethanol production, which is 30% more than the corresponding period last season.
