Australia: 135-year-old Bundaberg sugar mill to shut down due to low cane supply

Australia: Bundaberg Sugar Limited (BSL) announced that it would close the Bingera sugar mill near Bundaberg due to low cane supply.

According to the media report, Guy Basile, chief executive of the BSL said “We cannot run two mills in the region considering the low cane output this year. We will streamline the operations at Millaquin mill.

“Millaquin is more than capable, thanks to our ongoing investments in the future of BSL” he said.

The decision won’t impact the sugarcane farmers as they have to travel the same distance to carry their cane from fields to Millaquin mill. The mill administration has stated that they would ensure that all the contracts of farmers would be honoured.
