Australian Taxpayer’s Alliance condemns push for tax on sugary drinks

The Australian Taxpayer’s Alliance (ATA) has condemned the demand of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) for imposing a tax on sugar drinks.

According to miragenews.com, Brian Marlo, President of the ATA said, “This tax is nothing more than a revenue-raising exercise being pushed by bitter bureaucratic busybodies who should let Australians enjoy things for once.”

He said, “An experiment conducted by researchers at Cornell University for six months showed that when an American city faced a 10 per cent tax on calorie-rich products, the tax led to an increase in the purchase of beer.”

“We are against this type of tax and will continue to fight to ensure Australia never sees such regressive and ineffective policy”, Marlo further concluded.
