Avoid jumbo-friendly crop such as sugarcane: District Collector

Chittoor: The district collector Narayana Bharat Gupta has appealed farmers to take the cultivation of mulberry and other alternative crops instead of paddy and sugarcane to avoid the crop raids by wild elephants in the western mandals.

Addressing a meeting with the forest, agriculture and power department officials, he said that the government is taking steps to increase the compensation for the losses of crop, arrange solar fencing and elephant-proof trenches at the vulnerable villages and fields abutting the forests of Koundinya sanctuary and the neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

It was told to the collector that awareness camps would be organised to make farmers aware to refrain jumbo-friendly crops and replace the pattern with other commercial varieties.
