Bangladesh: Government sugar is sold at Tk 170 after price is set at Tk 140, says media report

The government’s fixed price for sugar from its mill stands at Tk 140 per kg, yet reports indicate that the commodity is being retailed at Tk 170 per kg in certain areas of Dhaka, raising concerns over potential counterfeit products or forged pricing, reported Bdnews24.

Sheikh Shoebul Alam, the chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation, expressed surprise at these revelations, stating on Wednesday that they were unaware of any such practices involving the government corporation’s brand. He suspects illicit activities may be underway, utilizing their company’s name and packaging design.

Alam affirmed their commitment to promptly address the issue, pledging to take immediate action to curb such practices either through altering packaging or pursuing appropriate measures.

State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu stated that the government has fixed the price of sugar within the range of Tk 140 to Tk 145 per kg, which is expected to remain steady until Eid-ul-Fitr. Additionally, he noted that cane sugar produced by the corporation retains its fixed price at Tk 140 per kg.
