Bangladesh government to buy 15,000 tonnes of sugar ahead of Eid

The Bangladesh government has decided to purchase 15,000 tonnes of sugar to distribute among families at a subsidized rate before Eid-ul-Azha.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the decision to purchase sugar on Wednesday.

The government plans to distribute sugar between 22 June and 5 July.
Md Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, additional secretary of the Cabinet Division said that the government will be able to procure sugar at lesser prices compared to the international market rates due to the existence of state-level agreements.

The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) would procure 15,000 tonnes of sugar from Meghna Sugar Refinery Ltd and City Sugar Industries Ltd by paying Tk123.05 crore, as per the proposal from the commerce ministry.
