Bangladesh: Import-export of Monem sugar refinery suspended

Bangladesh Customs stopped Abdul Monem Sugar Refinery Limited, a part of Abdul Momen Group, from bringing in or sending out goods because they suspected some rule-breaking. According to customs officials, the company’s bank accounts got frozen, so they can’t import sugar or anything else anymore, reported local Bangladeshi Media.

On April 23, the Customs Bond Commissionerate Dhaka South sent a letter to all customs houses and banks. Chattogram Customs House’s Customs Commissioner Mohammad Fyzur Rahman confirmed they got the letter and took action.

A customs official, speaking without giving their name, said the company was supposed to store imported sugar for local use in special warehouses. But because they messed up, they were asked to pay over Tk1,000 crore. They paid some but still owed Tk675 crore. So, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) acted under the Customs Act.

Mainuddin Monem, who manages the construction part of Monem Group, said he doesn’t know much about this issue. He said if they owe money legally, they’ll pay it.

ASM Mohiuddin Monem, deputy managing director of Monem Group, couldn’t be reached for comment.
