Bangladesh: Imported sugar to cost high

Dhaka: Sugar price in Bangladesh is likely to increase as the Finance Ministry has proposed to increase the specific duty and regulatory duty for both refined and raw sugar imports.

According to reports, the regulatory duty will be 30 per cent instead of 20 per cent for both refined and raw sugar imports.

With the increase in sugar prices, consumers are likely to face the burden.

For the import of raw sugar, the government plans to hike duty from Tk2000/MT to Tk3000/MT, whereas for refined sugar, it would be increased to Tk6,000/MT from Tk4,500/MT.

Bangladesh generally imports almost 2.5 million tonnes of raw sugar every year.
